Music Video

Research on Music Video

A music video is a short film or footage that accompanies a complete pieces of music or song, it also is used by words and images. Music video's are produced by a performer or an artist.

There are lots of purpose why people and artist make music videos for examples promotion,extension of outlets, extensions of income and synergy. The reason why performers and artist make music videos because it helps the audience have an understanding about what the song is really about and also it helps the artist relate to their target audience.

Did you know?
  • Back in the day artist weren't that famous, so they didn't have money to invest in their career.
  • Since 1960s, the technology had been gradually progressing it has a massive influence in the music industry. 
  • In 1960s, big bands started making videos. So they didn't have to appear on stage to perform their track. This video was broadcast on TV, this is the main reason why The Beatles become famous.
  • In February 1967 The Beatles made their first ever music video within two days so they could promote there new single called 'Strawberry Fields'. This was a huge hit, because of The Beatles lots of artist started to create their own music videos.
  • In 1950s, pop artist started making their own music videos as well for example Queen, Abba, Jackson 5 etc.
Modern music videos are primary. They are made and used as a marketing device so they can promote to sale their music tracks.

 Also did you know?
  • Michael Jackson made a song called 'Thriller', it was impressed by a short film and dance. This was the most expensive video that was made which come up to $10,000,000.
  • Lady Gaga ft Beyonce called 'Telephone' cost $7,000,000.
Music videos cost a lot of money starts from nothing up to Millions of dollars or pounds. The cost of music videos will be more effected by:
  • Overall quality of the production that you are looking for.
  • Whether you will be using extras, dancers etc.
  • Depends on how many hours or days you will need to be filming. 
  • Depends on how many hours or days you will need a studio.
  • Also if you need customs.
People started singing and making music videos and uploaded them on to You Tube, that's they started to get famous and lots of viewers. Also they applied to go on X- Factor to make a go at what they are good at. People start from the bottom and make their way up to the top.

Artist and bands promotes their songs, albums, music videos etc, there are different way they can go about this.
  • Artist makes CDs for their singles or their Albums, this is how they make a lot of money and get famous so they whole knows about them.
  • Artist continue to keep their sales of their albums for months after they are released.
  • Artist makes music videos so it can relate to the song and audience to make then have a more understanding about the song this is also another way that they make their money.
  • Artist put their music on their own websites so the audience can listen to it as well, they try and get the most viewers as they can.
  • Artist put their music on to the internet so people can buy their songs or albums, nowadays people don't buy music they download it for free this is legal because then the artist don't make their money. If they get a certain about of viewers everyday that's how they make their money also.
In the olden days music channels had to pay for the artists songs to be on the channel for example MTV, Hits etc. Nowadays there are lots of different music channels. The reason why artist let music channels play their songs is because its another way for them to get noticed. 

Artist also make their money every couple of months they have a concert were they will perform in front of thousands of people.

There are lots of different music genres for example Pop, R n B,Hip Hop, Slow Jams, Old School, Garage, Funky House, Bashment, House, Reggae and rap.

Conventions of music videos are within camera shots and footage. Also every artist have their own way in finding their links to other artist.

When artist start making their music videos, they have to analysis the track that they will be using so for example the meaning, the content, the narrative, the duration, and the style of the track,

There are different techniques when you a making music or music videos for example:
  • Cutting to a beat
  • Effects
  • SFX (sound effects)
  • Miming and lisping
  • Chroma key
  • Camera movements 
  • Different angels
  • Different shots
Before anyone wants to start making music videos or any videos, films etc they have to do a bit of research and planning. Research and planning are the two MAIN priority's of making any piece of film, the reason why is because you need research to plan and you need planning to make the footage. 

If anyone wants to make a film, music video any type of footage you would need to do several things for example:
  • You will need a set contract.
  • You will need a permission form so you can film.
  • You will need a risk assessment form.  
  • You will need a schedule.
  • You will need actors \ extras \ customs.  
  • You will need a production crew - (camera\director\producer\editor)
  • You will need a sheet full of location of where you want to film.
  • You will need a shooting list.
  • You will need mind maps of different ideas.
  • You will need a storyboard.
  • You will need a scrip.

Sheniz: Director, Editor, Actress \ singer, Costume
Jordan: Producer, Actor \ Rapper, Camera man, Location scout

Production diary:

Week 1:
Discussed and chose the song in which we will be using in our music video and allocted our job roles, understanding what specific roles we will be doing in the music video.(15 Minute discssion)

Week 2:
Discussed and developed mind maps of different music genres suggesting intial and final ideas.

Week 3:
Developed our final ideas into a storyboard of what specific movements and actions that will be happening whilst filming our music video.

Week 4: 
Filming Music Video

Week 5: 
Continue all asspects of filming and begin to edit the music video on final cut pro.

Week 6:
Complete all editing and written work. We will then post our video on youtube and show our class to recieve constructive feedback.


Mind map


Story board
Scene 1: 
An establishing over the sholder shot of the music video being watched onj a mobile phone, and Sheniz's boyfriend (Rusher) is angry that she is with another guy. The camera then zooms into the mobile phone and the music video will begin to play.

Scene 2: 
Shot reverse shot of Jordan and Sheniz at song opening establishing the scenery. Sheniz then starts with the song chorus. -Jordan  then raps to the camera on his doorstep.

Scene 3: 
Sheniz will then be singing to the camera and will be walking down a deserted road portraying different angels and camera shots (portraying her confidence).

Scene 4: 
Jordan does his rap whilst walking down the street after Sheniz but she is unaware that he is following her.

Scene 5: 
Jordan then grabs Sheniz's hand and walks infront of a car where we have a slight romantic dance and Sheniz sings to Jordan displaying her love for him. This will be transitioned with a short clip when Sheniz is with her boyfriend (Rusher) and catches her eye with Jordan but gets pulled away imdeiatley.
