Film Noir

Unit2:2 Drama Idea


Film Noir
Premise means:
- A story telling tool used to start a story.
- A character (protgonist) and their problems or conflict.
- Who wants what and why can't they have it.

Drama Idea
Characters:
*John = Detective (Mafia man brother) - his 40s, his rich, hansom, dressed smart, a mummy’s boy, smart, loved
*Toby = Mafia Man (Detectives brother) -his 30s, rich, hansom, ungrateful, selfish, hated, jealous man
*Charlie = Husband (dies) - his 20, got a wife, in lots of dept with the Mafia man
*Julie = Wife (widow) - her 20 got a husband, selfish, disrespectful, hated, tart, red lipstick, tight cloths, tits always out.

Plot
- The opening scene is in a graveyard - John is getting buried (husband)
- Close up on Julies eyes - flash back telling us how he died (wife)
- Zoomed out on Julie eyes - back to present
- Julie goes to detective to ask for his help; she portrays that she is in love with him and he falls for her act and give her the money.
- Close up on Julies eyes - flash back telling us what really has happened - phone call been made planning husband death also her making arrangements to Toby (Mafia man) to take his brothers money and run off together. 
- Zoomed out on Julie eyes - back to present
- Julie holding the money in one hand and in the other Toby's hand.

Film Noir - Production Dairy

Week1 - Monday 23rd January 2012 
Livia has set an assignment for the class to complete, we have to make a short film based on a film noir. We had 9weeks to complete this task, we worked in groups of 7. I worked with Raymond, Alessandra, Bom, Tevin, Aisha and Nada. We Had Several meetings and in each meetings we discussed different topics to talk about. In the first week we discussed who was taking which roles for example; director, producer, editor and actors by the end of this meeting we picked out roles for the assignment and we made a contract and signed it. I picked the roles of being a director of photography, assistant producer and a actor. The group left the meeting with a task to complete, we each had to come up with a story line so when it comes to next weeks meeting we can pick the best one out of 7 and that would be our story line for our film noir.  




Week2 - Monday 30th January 2012 
Today only half of my group was in this weeks meeting so we didn't really get anything done, we went through each storyline's and picked out the one we thought was really good and would enjoy making a short film. We also started to picked out characters, who would play each character, made a story board and started writing a script we also started thinking about location of where we can shoot each scene. 




Week3 - Monday 6th February 2012 

Once again only half of my group was in the meeting due to absence. We had to change job roles in order to continue with our pre-production. I changed from being a director of photography, assistant producer and a actor to become a director and a actor. We also just continued the things we spoke about in last week meeting. We was trying to get all the paper work done so when it comes to filming, we can just concentrate and get it finished for the deadline. HALF TERM  




Week4 - Monday 20th February 2012  

This week all of our group members were on so this caused a lot of complication and conflicted between each other. I called everyone up and said that we all have to wear black so we can start filming, but then when monday morning come everyone said ' arrrr we don't want to film today because we don't know what we are filming and don't want to rush it. I was like whatever because I told you lot we was going to start filming on monday morning and now we have got 5hour an nothing to do, so then the whole group started arguing then because we changed our job roles it caused more problems. I said to Raymond 'forget this come me and you start on the first scenes' so that's what we did. I am the director and the actor so I had to take part in two main jobs so it was kinda difficult but we got through it at the end.  




Week5 - Monday 27th February 2012 

There was more conflicted and arguments with the group this week. I think the reason why is because we are in a big group with strong personalities. We started to film the main part of our film but it was very stressful because the week before everyone was saying ' we don't want to rush the filming but then this week because everyone had to go and do things they wanted to rush the filming so I got really angry, so we filmed what we could film in the amount of time we had. We filmed in Westend and Hyde park. 




Week6 - Monday 5th March 2012  

We started to edited the footage which we already have filmed the editor and assistant editor (Raymond and Alessandra). They started to cut and paste each scenes together an started to make the footage make sense for the storyline.




Week7 - Monday 12th March 2012 

This week we decided to go back out and do some more filming for the final scenes, but once again more problems so I said to Tevin we will film his part of the story just so we have got some more footage to edit so that it what we did.   




Week8 - Monday 19th March 2012  

We got straight on to filming the end scene of Aisha dying in the graveyard, the reason why I picked to film the last scene here is because we needed a dramatic scene of the death of Aisha. The filming is finally finished (Thank God). Raymond and Alessandra continued on the editing.  




Week9 - Monday 26th March 2012 

Today every group had to complete all the paper work and have it all up to date. At 3 30 each group had to present 2mins of their short films, so by the end of the half term our film noir should be completed and ready for monday morning for the class to watch.

Evaluation Film Noir

Livia has set an assignment for the class to complete, I had to make a short film based on a film noir. I had 9weeks to complete this task, I worked in a group of 7. I worked with Raymond, Alessandra, Bom, Tevin, Aisha and Nada.   Everyone in my group were very smart and intelligent people.

My group was divide into different production roles I decided that I wanted to be an assisting producer, director of photography and a actor. However later on I decided to change my roles to be the main director and actor. The reason why I wanted to be the main director is because My group was hardly ever in and when they were there was always arguments bout who was doing what roles, what's everyone done, who's doing the script, story broad. This was going on for couple weeks and then I just switched at my group and told them right this is what's happening, this is what everyone is doing, so get on with it and do it.  



I believe that the group was too big and for that reason people talked over each other, argued, and weren't 100% interested as there was not enough roles to go around. Next time I believe the group should be smaller and the individuals should be positive,focused & 100% interested in the project.


Everyone really enjoyed watching our film noir, they all said that are film was the best out of the two classes, they loved it, it was very interesting and entertaining. We didn't have any complaints about our film, we made everyone laugh and everyone was entertained while watching it.

If Livia set this assignment again I would love to do it because it was fun and interesting also I would make sure I'm in a smaller group and with people that are willing to work and also that are always in college. I think if everyone in my group was in college all the time I think we could of got on and made a better film noir but it don't matter because we all learn from our mistakes now 
I know who to work with and not to work with.
