Self Evaluation

Sue has set an assignment for the class to complete. We had to get in a group of 4, I worked with Raymond, Jordan and Alessandra. We had to make a short ident for City of Westminster college


Everyone In my group are very intelligent and very creative, I'm happy that I picked to work with my group because we did a lot of planning, we come up with lots of different creative ideas and we had so many ideas we didn't know how we was going to pick the best one so we come up with a solution that we was going to put all our ideas into one. 


I think I managed my time very well within this project but could of done better, out of 5 I think I would rate myself a 3 the reason why is because I come up with lots of different ideas, I did three different mind maps also I played a part of being an actor within the ident.

We worked very well in our group and I think if we put our minds to it we could of made a better ident. The reason why I rated my group a 4 out of 5 because at the begging I was doing all the work for example thinking of all the ideas and I had to make three different mind maps with different ideas for example the first mind map what based on different types of animation what we was going to use, second mind map was based on all the ideas I come up with and the third mind map had to me based on one of the ideas but because we couldn't pick only one we put like five of our ideas and put it into one mind map.

I was very creative, I thought of most of the ideas. I designed all three of the mind maps and I also played part of being an actor in the City of Westminster ident. I also took part with the audio pitch. I also give myself a 4 out of 5 because I wouldn't of been able to complete this task with any other group  

In my own opinion me and my group managed to meet the creative brief within out animation because the ident was very original for City of Westminster college, we all met the deadlines that was set. I think it also reflected on the style, branding and attitude because we have used the college logo and mentioned 4 subject which the college study, we also used the college building so it looks like its a real life footage. We thought by using clay animation, Morphs would be great opportunity to use because it relates to us as we are currently studying media and have had experience during the past year.

The thing that I was most proud of was the journey from the start to end of this project, this means that we didnt have any experience of making a ident or even have any ideas we thought of all of it on the spot and on top of that that fact on how the final footage of the ident turned out to look and overall the whole assignment turned out.

If I had to do this assignment again there would be a couple things that I would of changed for example I think we  made our time for time for the planning we could of made a different story line and maybe would of been better than what we made. We gave all our planning to one of the group members, (she's always in college) she took it home knowing that she wasn't going to be in college the next day and that's when we needed it so we could finish of our ident so yeah the next time I will be making copy's of every work we do to give to EVERYONE so everyone has got a copy.

In my own opinion I'm very happy that I picked to work with Alessandra, Raymond and Jordan the reason why is because it was very fun, interesting and very creative. If i had to do any project I would automatic go and work with the same three people over and over again.

Frankie Boyle

Statement from Channel Four:


Frankie Boyle is a stand up comedian. He makes several jokes about people, everyone finds him very funny, interesting and loves watching him. Frankie is always testing his boundaries, he likes to experiment with his style by performing his best in his stand up comedy shows. 


Boyle made a joke about Harvey Price where he said  'I have a feeling that Jordan married a cage fighter because she needed someone strong enough to stop Harvey from fucking her'. 


This comment received negative attention from viewers, some of whom complained to Ofcom. The regulator has been critical of Boyle's material but has taken into account the way in which Katie Price has exposed her children to the media.

It has come to my attention that his joke may not of been appropriate for his audience which we have had several complaints and also received one from Jordan price; mother of Harvey prince referring to Harvey and his disability. The Reason why I am righting this is to apologise on Boyle's behalf for any offence caused but he is also allowed to say what he wants to say because he is entitled to freedom of speech. 

Racist David Starkey letter of complaint to the BBC (Lucy)

Complaint letter to the BBC about David Starkey   

Dear BBC,

I am writing to you to complain about a man called David Starkey, I saw him on one of your shows where he uses stereotypes, is rude and very racist. I was very offended by the way he spoke. I thought he was very aggressive and also very racist to black people in the UK.

Starkey made comments saying 'the whites have become blacks'. He means that black culture has influenced people, for example what happened in the London riots. White youths in general have become violent, destructive and 'gangster culture' is the new fashion." Your general audience could and did find it offensive. Politicians and the head of the Labour party have said that it is "racist". 

 The law has been broken; in the Race Relations Act (2000), all forms of racism, direct or indirect, physical or verbal abuse towards other races is against the law. 

In addition to this, Starkey's behaviour goes against your own editorial guidelines, specifically the one dealing with harm and offence. To quote Editorial Guideline 1.2.5  on Harm and Offence:

• We aim to reflect the world as it is, including all aspects of the human experience and the realities of the natural world.  But we balance our right to broadcast innovative and challenging content with our responsibility to protect the vulnerable from harm and avoid unjustifiable offence.  We will be sensitive to, and keep in touch with, generally accepted standards as well as our audiences' expectations of our content, particularly in relation to the protection of children. 

  David Starkey is a rude, aggressive and racist man, who uses stereotypes. Maybe the reason why his opinions are like this is because they are based on his old fashioned beliefs. He goes from one vile statement to another.

   Most of the public think he's rude, aggressive, uses stereotypes and a racist man , Politicians think he is the same, and so do I. So I'm making a stand because I think he should be banned.

Unit 33.1 (Claymation animation Gumbasia & Super Morph.)

Evaluation

Gumbasia animation is a 10 second to 3 minutes of a short film produced in 1953 and released on September 2 1955. Art Clokey produced the first clay animation, he made Gumbasia out of clay. Its doesn't have a narrative and it looks quite abstract, he uses bright colours and lots of different shapes. All the shapes merge into another shape, the back ground is funky and also adds to the abstract feeling of the footage.

Sue set an assignment for me to complete, I had to work in a group of four so I worked with Alessandra, Raymond and Geoffrey. We had to make a short video by using Gumbasia animation and we had to make it out of clay. We messed about with the clay for a bit to get a rough idea so we could make our short video, we decided to make shapes and roll it about for a bit, then once we sorted out what we were roughly going to do we used the same shape to turn them into monsters. We then added some Gumbasia music to the footage so it could be more effective and interesting while everyone is watching it. I think everything went well I really enjoyed making our video. The thing that didn't go so well was when we were making it I didn't understand what we were making, how we were making it, so then I had to do some research so I could help the group out and make a good video. If we was to do this assignment again I think next time we should plan it more and try and not waste time because our time was limited.

Aardman started to make short films by using clay animation. He is also known as Aardman studios, because he was always in the studio called British studio. Aardman is known for clay animation and stop - motion for example Morph, Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit, Flash Away, Shaun the Sheep etc. 

Morph is a children's character made out of orange clay, he was created by Aardman specifically for deaf children as there is no speech, however he become much more popular with the general public in the programme Take Hart.

I think the strengths of clay animation is that it's easy to make, easy to animate, quick to make it once its heated up, easy to move about and if you need to change something you can do it there and then. Also when you make clay animations the films are supposed to be short.

I think that there are lots of limitations of using clay animation because every time I tried to move my character my hand kept getting in the way of the shots. It was hard for the clay to stay in one place, for example when I made my character start climbing up the rocks he kept falling off and breaking his arms or legs. Using clay animation isn't realistic as once I started to mess about with the clay to make my characters the clay wasn't strong enough. For example, when my super morph came to save the little boy I had to use string so I could make him fly but because the clay was too heavy and wasn't as strong as before it kept on breaking, so I had to try and put it back together and start from the previous. My animation was 30 seconds long, but it took me hours to complete this task, that's the only thing about using clay, but once I finished filming my shots the editing was finished within 15 minutes. 

Right now I'm going to compare clay animation and cut out animation. Cut out animation is when you use all different types of magazines, news papers, pictures, text. It's simple all you have to do is cut out what you like then try and make a story line of your cut out. You have to go on to a software called IStopMotion and you have to move the pictures slowly and take a picture so once you have finished then play it back to you, you will have a moving footage of what you just did.

In my own opinion I don't think that there is a big difference in using clay animation or cut out animation because you are doing the same thing but one is with clay  and the other one is with paper. If I had to this assignment again I wouldn't know which one to pick because either way they both have their limitations. The similarities of using clay animation and cut out animation is the fact that you have to come up with a storyline then you have to move your image slightly every time to take a picture. So once your footage has all be captured it is a final moving image, then you have to edit your video by putting effects, sound effects, credits ect.  

Both of my assignments went well, I really enjoyed making both of my videos out of clay and cut out. I don't think that anything went wrong. I wouldn't change anything if I had to do this assignment again I would just make it more professional, because I have got the experience to know how to do it, what to do and how to use the software, so I will set it up  better and make it look more sleek. 

I've gained great experience to do lots of different animation for example I've done clay animation, cut out animation, zoetrope animation and Eadward Muybridge. I don't have a certain animation that I really enjoyed because I enjoyed all of them, but if I had to pick out of the four animations I think I would want to do the clay animation again.

Storyline:

There is a family that live on a farm and the daughter has to go to work every morning so she can provide for the family. One morning she wakes up to go to work, when she's at work she get a call from her parents saying "Don't be late for dinner we have got a surprise for you". So she goes home and meets a doctor called Francis and she falls in love with him, BUT he has got some bad news. He try to tell her but then the door knocks and its Francis GIRLFRIEND!!. She heart broken, TO BE CONTINUED!!

Evaluation 

Sue has set an assignment which I had to complete within a group, I worked with Alessandra and Raymond It was very fun and interesting. We had to make a short film by using cut out animation. Cut out animation is the oldest form of animation around. It is the technique for producing animation using flat characters, props and backgrounds cut from materials such as paper, card, stiff fabric or even photographs.

Here are the positive things why people use cut - out animation for example its easy to use, easy to animate, easy to move about, it also easy when you have lots of characters and you want them to talk because all you do it cut a slit by their mouth so it can move up and down everyone you take a picture and you play your footage you can see that its a moving footage and looks like they are talking then all you have to do is put sound effects into the footage.

The negative aspects of why people don't like using cut - out animation are; your only limited to magazines, new papers for example if you think of a story line but you can't find any images to fit in with your animation you have to find a different story line. There is a lot of cutting out and it wastes a lot of time when you could be already starting your video, also once you have done that you have to sit on the computer and press the button every time you move your image a little bit. As I was saying before you can't start making your story boards or story line until you have picked out all of your images. Last thing cut - out animation took me and my group along time to complete because we had to go through the magazine and start cutting out images, putting a story line together and making a story board. But once we finished the main part, we got straight onto the editing, it took us about 20 minutes to edit, add voice overs and sound effects. As you can see our animation is about 30 seconds but it took us 7hours to complete just the first part.

There are lots of animators which have used cut - out animation. For example Terry Gilliam, he started his career as a animator strip cartoonist for children series called Do Not Adjust  Your Set. Also Maya Weksler is another animator that devolved cut - out animation for children it's called Miss Polly Had A Dolly, its a nursery rhyme. Here are some more examples of films, music videos, programmes ' Fonejacker, Bruno Mars (Lighters), RiRi (Japanese film) etc. 

I feel that me and my group's cut - out animation was successful and worked very well because there were no arguments, we got on straight away, we started to cut out pictures from magazines and started to think of a story line which we could of used. We had problems when it come down to the editing because we didn't know whether to use voice overs, speak bubbles or music. So then we just decided to put all three of them into our cut - out animation video. It was really fun working with Alessandra and Raymond and I would love to work with them again, I think we make a good team and I think that they would say the same.

Unit 33.1 Eadweard Muybridge - (Walk Cycle & Stop Motion Animation)

Eadwaerd Muybridge  was an English photographer who spent much of his life in the United States. He is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras to capture motion , and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip.

1. Eadwaerd Muybridge was known for his work on animal locomotion.

2. He Changed his name 7 times’s since he was born and was know before hand as Edward James Muggeridge.

3. He was put on trial for shooting his wife’s secrete lover and was acquitted for murder.

4. He is famous for his "Galloping Horse" and "American bison cantering" set to motion.

5. His Animations were viewed in a machine called a zoopraxiscope.

6. He was a photographer at the start of his career.

7. His photographic sequences have been published since the 1950's as artist’s references

8. Canadian poet rob winger wrote muybridges horse: a poem in 3 phrases.

9. He is known for pushing the limits of what a camera can do.

10. He transformed photography and paved the way for motion pictures.

Eadwaerd Muybridge captured motion by setting up lots of cameras to capture the movements of the horse. Then he put all the pictures in a sequence to create the motion of the horse actually galloping. 

He then re-created his experiments over and over again; by using a software called I Stop Motion on the Mac computer. This was very easy for him because he created the horses galloping, so he knew what he had to do to create another movement.  The software which Eadwaerd Muybridge used allows you to take pictures in different steps in a movement then once you play the footage from the beginning to the end. That was just another way that Muybridge made his experiments be re-created.

He also made another moving motion with a male and female dancing. He used a Zoetrope this was a different method which he used.

Sue made the class make a moving movement motion by using the Mac. I used two different ways to make my moving movement motions, I used I Stop Motion and also Photo Booth these are two different software on the mac.

I used the I Stop Motion software first, to make my moving movement motion I sat on my girl and started to spin on my chair slowly, while I was spinning on my hair my friend was taking pictures of me. I went round on the chair 3 times as you can see the first round my hood was on, the second round I slowly took my hood off and the third round I just went round. This is the moving movement motion which I have created.

To make my moving movement motion I had to use 6 cameras on the Mac computers, I used a software called Photo Booth. I walked from one corner to the other corner of the room, as I was walking passed each camera took a picture. I then had 6 picture of me walking pass the cameras, I had to put each picture together to make my picture into a moving movement and this is what it looks like.
